My sound on my toshiba laptop does not work?

the laptop runs xp and we just fixed it and now the sound does not work i went to sound and device and its locked up and i did the add hardware and i get error message i did the whole restart thing and that didnt work either i even tryed to download the sound driver and yet agin it does not work i keep getting error messages for it HELP!!!!
