How do you tell if something is a strong or weak electrolyte?
You can tell if something is a strong or a weak electrolyte by the number of ions that disociate into solution. In a strong electrolyte like NaCl, all the Na+ and Cl- ions separate into the solution, and thus NaCl exists entirely as ions. Also, you can test to see if something is a strong electrolyte by ping an electric current through an aqeous solution of the substance. If it is strong, the electric current will p through the solution and make a lightbulb glow. Where as strong electrolytes are soluble, weak electrolytes are primarily insoluble in solution. Thus, they will only partially allow the light bulb to glow and only a small number of ions will disociate into solution.
